India’s top sugar mills, including Balrampur Chini and Dhampur Sugar, are among the prominent companies making a beeline for campus recruitment at the National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur.

The bullish outlook of the domestic sugar and ethanol sectors, apart from the growing environmental and quality control issues, are contributing to the growing demand for sugar technology professionals.

According to NSI, about 50 per cent of the current batch students have already been placed in the first phase of campus hiring. The major recruiters comprise Balrampur Chini Mills, Dhampur Sugar Mills, Renuka Sugars, Triveni Engineering & Industries, ISGEC Heavy Engineering and VRL Automations.

“We have been able to provide placements to 78 students of Sugar Technology, Sugar Engineering and Alcohol Technology courses during the first phase, which is heartening, considering the general industrial scenario due to Covid,” NSI placement officer D Swain said. The second phase of the campus recruitment will soon be started.

“In view of a large number of ethanol units being set up, concerns on environmental issues and quality control during the sugar processing, there is now a greater demand for Alcohol Technologists, Sugar Technologists, Quality Control Chemists and Environment Chemists,” NSI director Narendra Mohan noted.

He said sugar companies are also recruiting female technologists and engineers, and during the first phase, the highest package of Rs 5,50,000 per annum was offered to a final year Sugar Technology girl student by ISGEC Heavy Engineering.

“A few companies have also offered free meals as part of the remuneration package keeping in view the Covid crisis,” he added.

Apart from sugar companies, reputed machinery and chemical manufacturers also visited the campus for recruitment, which NSI observed was an encouraging signal.

Recently, NSI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), a Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) laboratory, for developing a technology to package pure sugarcane juice without the use of preservatives. This is expected to provide another revenue stream to perk up the farm value chain in Uttar Pradesh.
