The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released its official 2024 California Walnut Industry Objective Measurement Report, projecting a 19% decline in walnut production for the year. The 2024 crop is forecasted at 670,000 tons (607,814 metric tons), down from 824,000 tons (747,520 metric tons) in 2023. The drop in production comes as a result of reduced bearing acreage, with 370,000 acres in 2024, a 4% decrease from the 385,000 acres reported in 2023.
In addition to the updated acreage and crop estimate, the CA walnut industry is finalizing the close out of the 2023 crop year. While final shipment and inventory figures will be released later this month, preliminary data indicates that the 2023 crop is virtually sold out. Despite the decline in California walnut production for 2024, industry leaders remain optimistic.
Robert Verloop, Executive Director and CEO of the California Walnut Board and Commission, commented, “As anticipated, the upcoming 2024 crop is lower than the historic record crop of 2023 and will deliver the high quality that defines California walnuts globally. Although the 2024 crop size is moderate, it is comparable to the 2019 crop. Due to strong summer demand, we anticipate that the end-of-season shipment report will show a significantly reduced carry-in volume compared to last year. The combined carry-in and new 2024 crop volumes are manageable, fostering improved confidence among sellers and buyers and ensuring stable markets.”
