Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on Sunday. He submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. Singh's resignation comes at a time when violence has been ongoing in the state for a long period. Before resigning, he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.
After meeting the Home Minister, he met the Governor and handed over his resignation. Singh was accompanied by 14 MLAs from the BJP and NPF, along with state BJP president A Sharda and senior party leader Sambit Patra. In his resignation letter, Singh thanked the central government for its timely intervention in the state, developmental efforts, and various projects launched for the welfare of the people of Manipur.
Violence first erupted in Manipur in May 2023. The conflict has been widely criticized at both national and international levels. The violence is primarily between the Meitei community, which resides in the valley areas, and the Kuki community, which lives in the hilly regions.
In nearly two years of unrest, over 250 people have been killed, and more than 60,000 have been displaced. Several ministers' and legislators' houses have also been set on fire during the violence.
Legislative assembly elections were held in Manipur from 28 February to 5 March 2022 in two phases, to elect 60 members of the assembly.
