Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has announced a nationwide agitation from May 27 over fertiliser shortages, rising diesel prices, and issues related to Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. The Morcha has called upon farmer and agricultural labour unions across the country to burn copies of MSP orders in every village and hold protests against black marketing of fertilisers and the increase in diesel prices. SKM has also announced a National Council meeting on June 17 and an All India Convention in New Delhi on July 28 to decide the future course of action.
In a press release, SKM said it has decided to launch a struggle against the Narendra Modi government over MSP for the Kharif 2026-27 season, the Rs 3.90 per litre hike in petrol and diesel prices, and the ongoing fertiliser crisis. According to the organisation, the government was aware that fertiliser demand rises every year during this season, yet it failed to ensure adequate supplies of crude oil, natural gas, and cooking gas. This, it alleged, has adversely affected the availability of diesel and fertilisers for farmers.
SKM claimed that the natural farming model promoted by the Prime Minister would lead to at least a 30 percent decline in crop production. It accused the Modi government of surrendering to corporate lobbies, American imperialism, and the global agro-chemical cartel, while 48 farmers are allegedly being forced to commit suicide every day in the country.
The organisation further alleged that the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) is still using the old Wholesale Price Index (WPI) base year of 2011-12, despite the central government declaring a new base year in 2023-24. It said the Commission understates cultivation costs by relying on national averages and a three-year average production methodology, while valuing farmers’ labour below minimum wages. According to SKM, the most serious issue is the government’s refusal to implement the Swaminathan Commission’s C2+50 percent formula, instead adopting what it described as the incomplete A2+FL cost formula.
SKM alleged that between 2016 and 2025, farmers cultivating 20 major crops suffered losses worth Rs 27 lakh crore, while mill owners, exporters, and middlemen benefited. It further claimed that in the 2025-26 Kharif season alone, farmers lost Rs 2.64 lakh crore from four crops - paddy, cotton, soybean, and maize. According to the Morcha, 83 percent of farmers never receive MSP. In October 2025, soybean was reportedly sold 21 percent below MSP, moong 24 percent below, maize 24 percent below, groundnut 26 percent below, ragi 35 percent below, and paddy 1.8 percent below MSP.
