All Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) will function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026, to ensure continued access to banking services for customers ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike, the Ministry of Finance said on Wednesday.
The decision has been taken in view of the strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) for September 28-30, which follows the weekend holidays on September 26 and 27. The government said the measure is aimed at preventing disruption to the banking needs of citizens over an extended period.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the operation of all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and Currency Chests on September 27, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The ministry said the arrangement has been made proactively to ensure that customers can access essential banking services before the proposed strike. Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will therefore operate as they normally would on a working day.
The proposed strike has been called by the UFBU, an umbrella organisation representing bank unions, for three days from September 28 to 30. The strike period comes immediately after the September 26-27 weekend, which could otherwise have resulted in several consecutive days of limited banking operations.
The government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to defer the proposed strike. At the same time, measures have been taken to maintain essential banking services without interruption, the ministry said.
The Department of Financial Services reiterated that the welfare and convenience of bank customers remain a priority for the government. The Sunday working arrangement is intended to provide customers an additional opportunity to complete their banking requirements before the proposed strike begins.
The ministry's announcement applies specifically to all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks, with RBI approval covering branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and Currency Chests for operations on September 27.
