UP leads with 12 per cent ethanol blending in petrol

In terms of blending, state-run oil marketing company Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is at top with 11.63 per cent ethanol blending in petrol.

Central government has set a target of 20 per cent ethanol blending (E20) by 2025-26. For this, 10.16 billion litres of ethanol will be required annually. The total ethanol requirement in the country will be 13.5 billion litres to meet the demand for other user industries like chemical, pharmaceutical and potable liquor. According to the latest data of ethanol blending, 512.75 crore litres of contracts have been done for the ethanol supply year 2022-23 (Dec-Nov). From December 1, 2022, to April 16, 2023, a total of 208.72 crore litres of ethanol were supplied out of this contracted quantity.

Out of this, the maximum supply of 31.5 crore litres has been made in Uttar Pradesh, which means that the percentage of ethanol blending in the state has been the highest at 11.92 per cent. In Uttar Pradesh, 83.08 crore litres of contracts have been done for the supply for the whole year. Maharashtra is at second number where 11.89 per cent ethanol is being mixed in petrol. Maharashtra has been supplied 25.34 crore litres during the period under review against the deal of 67.02 crore litres.

In this case, Kerala and Uttarakhand are jointly at number three, where 11.86 per cent ethanol is being blended in petrol. However, their volumes are small in terms of contracts and supplies. Kerala has received supply of 9.83 crore litres against the contract of 21.22 crore litres and Uttarakhand has received supply of 1.35 crore litres against the contract of 3.46 crore litres. Bihar is at number four where 11.84 per cent blending is happening, while Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh are at number five where 11.82 per cent blading is taking place.

The percentage of ethanol blending in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat has been 11.75 per cent, 11.74 per cent and 11.71 per cent respectively. The supply of ethanol in these states has been 14.87 crore, 21.17 crore and 11.69 crore liters respectively. Contracted quantity for Karnataka is 306.8 million litres, for Tamil Nadu it is 405.55 million litres and for Gujarat the contracted quantity of ethanol is 304.9 million litres for the full year.

As far as government oil marketing companies (OMCs) are concerned, among all the three oil companies, HPCL is blending 11.63 per cent. BPCL is blending 11.58 per cent and Indian Oil 11.56 per cent ethanol in petrol. But in terms of deals and supplies, Indian Oil is at the forefront. Indian Oil has signed deals for 233.47 crore litres for the full ethanol supply year, against which 98.36 crore litres have been supplied till April 16, 2023. BPCL has been supplied 56.66 crore litres as against the deal of 147.43 crore litres and HPCL has been supplied 53.7 crore litres as against 131.85 crore litres.

During the period under review, 107.33 crore litres of ethanol was produced directly from sugarcane juice/sugar syrup, while 64.72 crore litres were produced from B-heavy molasses and 2.68 crore litres from C-heavy molasses. Ethanol producers produced 27.96 crore litres of ethanol from surplus rice received from FCI and 6.02 crore litres from spoiled food grains.
