Bihar’s Sudha Eyes Global Expansion Amid Rising Dairy Demand, Targets Gulf and Southeast Asia

Bihar’s dairy brand Sudha is expanding globally, targeting Gulf and Southeast Asian markets amid rising dairy demand. Showcased at Indusfood Asia 2026 in Singapore, the cooperative aims to build long-term export partnerships. Backed by COMFED’s vast farmer network, the move could boost rural incomes and position Bihar in the global dairy trade.

Sudha, the flagship dairy brand of the Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation Ltd. (COMFED), is stepping up efforts to establish itself as a global player, leveraging rising international demand for dairy products and India’s growing export potential.

At the recently held Indusfood Asia 2026 at Singapore Expo, Bihar showcased its dairy capabilities before a global audience of buyers and industry stakeholders. The state delegation included Shirsat Kapil Ashok (IAS), Secretary, Dairy, Fisheries & Animal Resources Department, Government of Bihar and Chairman, COMFED, along with Sameer Saurabh (IAS), Managing Director, COMFED. Their participation underscored a strategic push to position Sudha as a credible international brand.

The Singapore outreach forms part of a broader export roadmap. Sudha is actively targeting markets in the Gulf and Southeast Asia - regions characterised by strong dairy consumption and a significant Indian diaspora. These markets are seen as ideal entry points for scaling international operations.

The expansion builds on initial export successes. Over the past year, Sudha has shipped products such as ghee and traditional Indian sweets to the United States and Canada on a pilot basis. These early consignments have helped the cooperative understand global logistics, regulatory compliance, and consumer preferences.

COMFED’s extensive dairy network - comprising thousands of milk societies and supporting lakhs of farmers—makes this global push particularly significant for Bihar’s rural economy. Increased exports are expected to translate into higher and more stable incomes for dairy farmers.

During the Singapore event, the delegation held discussions with buyers and distributors from Southeast Asia, focusing on building long-term trade partnerships and strengthening distribution channels. The aim is to transition from limited, trial exports to a sustained international presence.

“Sudha represents the strength of Bihar’s cooperative movement and the quality of our dairy products. Our focus is on building long-term global partnerships while ensuring that the benefits flow back to our farmers,” said Ashok.

Sudha’s cooperative model is seen as a key differentiator, ensuring that profits are redistributed among farmers. This aligns well with growing global preferences for ethically sourced and sustainable products.

To support its export ambitions, COMFED is also upgrading infrastructure and processes, including adherence to international quality standards, improved packaging, robust cold chain systems, and efficient logistics.

Officials believe the timing is favourable, as global dairy demand continues to rise amid shifting supply chains. This opens opportunities for cost-competitive producers like India to expand their footprint.

For Bihar, the initiative carries broader economic implications. “We hope Sudha’s global success will help reposition Bihar in India’s economic narrative as a contributor to the export economy,” said Saurabh.

With a clear roadmap - strengthening domestic leadership while expanding into culturally aligned overseas markets—Sudha is steadily moving towards becoming Bihar’s first global consumer brand.
