Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Jagat Prakash Nadda, has assured full support to Telangana for meeting its fertilizer needs during the ongoing Kharif season. This assurance came during a meeting held yesterday with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who sought uninterrupted supply of urea for July and August—critical months for the state's farmers.
CM Revanth Reddy highlighted that Telangana has faced a steep shortfall of nearly 2,00,000 metric tonnes of urea between April and June this year, severely affecting farmers during peak sowing season. “We requested Minister Nadda to support Telangana farmers through the timely release of urea during the farming season,” he said. The delegation also urged the Centre to increase the quota of domestically produced urea for Telangana’s farmers.
Responding to these concerns, Minister Nadda assured Telangana Chief Minister of all support to meet the genuine demand of the farmers of the State and instructed the officials of Department of Fertilizers to ensure supplies as per requirement. However, he also raised concerns over excessive urea usage in Telangana, warning that it could harm soil health in the long run. As per government data, urea sales during Rabi 2024–25 were 21% higher than the previous season, while Kharif 2025 so far has recorded a 12.4% rise compared to the same period last year.
Fertilizers Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra, who was also present, highlighted the PM PRANAM scheme, which incentivizes states to reduce chemical fertilizer consumption and adopt sustainable alternatives like organic and natural farming. He urged Telangana officials to curb diversion of urea to non-agricultural uses and ensure equitable distribution across districts.
The meeting was attended by Members of Parliament Mallu Ravi and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Telangana’s Special Representative in New Delhi A.P. Jithender Reddy, and senior officials from both the central and state governments.
