In light of the adverse impacts of climate change and aligning with the Government of India’s commitment to achieving a net-zero goal by 2070, a panel of scientists, policymakers, farmers, industry experts, and think tanks will convene at the 'Sustainable Agriculture Summit & Awards 2024' in New Delhi on August 7, 2024. This summit aims to discuss and advance sustainable agricultural practices for a greener future.
Government estimates project significant reductions in crop yields due to climate change, with wheat yields expected to decrease by 19.3 percent by 2050 and 40 percent by 2080, and kharif maize yields by 18 percent and 23 percent, respectively. Such changes threaten crop yields, nutrition quality, and food security, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable agricultural strategies.
Agriculture, being the third-largest contributor to India's greenhouse gas emissions, plays a vital role in the nation’s net-zero emissions goal. The summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for reducing agricultural emissions and transforming food production, distribution, and consumption.
By 2050, India’s population is projected to reach 1.7 billion, necessitating 400 million tonnes of food grains to meet growing demands. The summit will underscore the importance of enhancing access to, availability, and efficient use of agricultural inputs to achieve the Government of India’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ goal.
It is imperative in this wake that all those part of the agriculture ecosystem work together to find long-term solutions to these pressing challenges, and one of the key objectives of bringing a large network of stakeholders at this conference is to spur discussions and brainstorm ideas, said Dr Navneet Anand, Chairman of the Organizing Committee.
