Dehradun’s renowned litchi has made its debut in the European market, with the first consignment of fresh fruit exported from Dehradun to Italy. The shipment, facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, was dispatched on June 18, marking a significant milestone for India’s fresh fruit exports.
The inaugural consignment comprised one metric tonne of fresh litchi and is expected to open new opportunities for growers and exporters from the Himalayan state. The export reflects the growing international demand for premium-quality Indian fruits and strengthens India’s presence in global fresh produce markets.
Dehradun litchi is widely known for its distinctive sweetness, attractive red colour, delicate aroma and superior pulp quality. The region produces popular varieties such as Rose Scented, Calcuttia and Bedana, which enjoy strong consumer preference. The favourable agro-climatic conditions of Uttarakhand, particularly in Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts, contribute significantly to the fruit’s quality and market appeal.
The export initiative has also translated into better returns for farmers. According to APEDA, growers received prices nearly 25 per cent higher than prevailing domestic market rates for the exported produce. The higher realization is expected to encourage farmers to adopt improved cultivation and post-harvest practices while increasing participation in export-oriented horticulture.
Officials said the shipment was made possible through coordinated efforts involving APEDA, the Uttarakhand government, exporters, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), logistics partners and other stakeholders. The initiative highlights the importance of collaboration across the agricultural value chain in enabling access to international markets.
The export of Uttarakhand litchi to Italy is seen as an important step towards diversifying export destinations for India’s fresh fruits. It also reinforces India’s reputation as a reliable supplier of premium horticultural products in global markets.
APEDA said it will continue to support India’s agri-export agenda through market development initiatives, quality assurance systems, infrastructure support and capacity-building programmes aimed at improving farmers’ access to high-value international markets.
