BJP Maintains Dominance in Assam, Set to Return to Power

The BJP is set to retain power in Assam, crossing the majority mark with a strong lead in Assembly elections. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is heading for a decisive win, while the Congress’s Gaurav Gogoi trails behind.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to return to power in Assam, with its victory in the Assembly elections now appearing almost certain. The 126-member Assembly requires 64 seats for a majority. As of 6:36 pm, the BJP has already won 62 seats and is leading in 20 more, comfortably crossing the majority mark.

The Indian National Congress is leading or has won 19 seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have secured or are ahead in 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal are leading in two seats each. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress and an Independent candidate are ahead in one seat each.

In the Jalukbari constituency, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading by a massive margin of 89,434 votes over Congress candidate Bidisha Niyog after 22 rounds of counting. In another key result, Congress leader Tarun Gogoi lost the Jorhat seat, defeated by BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by 23,182 votes.

In the previous 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP and its allies had won 76 seats, while the Congress secured 48 and others won two seats.

Regionally, the BJP has maintained near-total dominance in eastern and southern Assam. However, an interesting trend has emerged in areas bordering northern districts of West Bengal. Despite the BJP’s strong presence in North Bengal, adjoining regions in Assam have seen victories by Congress and BPF candidates, indicating localized electoral dynamics.
