The Jharkhand government on Thursday waived off loans up to Rs 2 lakh of 1.76 lakh farmers of the state under the 'Kisan Karz Mafi Yojana'. During the 'Kisan Sammelan' held at Prabhat Tara Maidan in Ranchi, Chief Minister Hemant Soren transferred funds to cover the loans of 1,76,977 farmers from the government treasury. A total amount of Rs 400.66 crore was transferred to loan accounts under the scheme. The government had previously decided to raise the loan waiver limit from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh during a cabinet meeting on August 7.
Chief Minister Soren emphasized that his government is committed to supporting farmers, laborers, women, tribal communities, and backward classes. He noted that earlier loans of up to Rs 50,000 had been waived for approximately 4.73 lakh farmers.
Soren criticized the central government, claiming they can waive large loans for big businesses but fail to raise the minimum support price (MSP) for farmers' crops, provide pensions for the elderly, or empower women economically. He referenced the farmers' protests against agricultural laws, stating that when farmers and laborers unite, they can bring a change.
He also mentioned that efforts to help the poor, farmers, and women sometimes face opposition. Soren said that he was jailed on false charges before the Lok Sabha elections, reassured the public that he is back, thanks to their support, and will continue working for the state's development in the future.
