India has diversified its fertiliser import sources by procuring urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP) from nearly 17 countries following the conflict triggered by the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February. Besides Gulf countries such as Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, India also sourced fertilisers from Russia, the United States, Vietnam and Türkiye. Between April and June 2026, the country imported 15.08 Lakh tonnes of urea and 7.11 Lakh tonnes of DAP, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Anupriya Patel informed the Rajya Sabha.
She said India imported 5.83 lakh tonnes of urea and 49,000 tonnes of DAP in April, 4.10 lakh tonnes of urea and 1.32 lakh tonnes of DAP in May, and 5.15 lakh tonnes of urea and 5.30 lakh tonnes of DAP in June. Urea imports during June included 1.65 lakh tonnes from Algeria, 3.95 lakh tonnes from Egypt, 1.22 lakh tonnes from Georgia, 1.38 lakh tonnes from Nigeria, 2.84 lakh tonnes from Russia and 1.08 lakh tonnes from Saudi Arabia. Other countries supplying urea to India included Finland, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Türkiye and Vietnam.
DAP imports came from a relatively smaller group of countries. In April, India imported 49,000 tonnes exclusively from Morocco. In May, purchases were made from Morocco, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. With kharif demand picking up, India widened its sourcing network in June, importing DAP from Algeria, China, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United States.
During this period, the United States supplied only 60,000 tonnes of DAP in July and no other fertiliser. Similarly, China exported only 29,000 tonnes of urea in April and 45,000 tonnes of DAP in July. China had earlier curbed urea exports citing domestic requirements.
The Minister also shared data on fertiliser availability and sales during the past four months. As of April 1, 2026, India had an opening stock of 54.22 lakh tonnes of urea and 20.93 lakh tonnes of DAP. Between April 1 and July 29, 2026, the country's requirement was 122.84 lakh tonnes of urea and 35.44 lakh tonnes of DAP, while availability stood significantly higher at 177.28 lakh tonnes of urea and 43.03 lakh tonnes of DAP, respectively.
Under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, sales during April-July reached 112.53 lakh tonnes of urea and 26.59 lakh tonnes of DAP. As of July 29, stocks stood at 64.75 lakh tonnes of urea and 16.44 lakh tonnes of DAP. In addition, 21.21 lakh tonnes of Single Super Phosphate (SSP) were available. Domestic production during the current kharif season up to June reached 71.55 lakh tonnes of urea and 9.84 lakh tonnes of DAP.
