CIL and HURL Sign MoU to Explore Coal Gasification-Based Ammonia-Urea Plant at Sindri

Coal India Limited (CIL) and Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the setting up of a Coal Gasification-based Ammonia-Urea Plant at HURL’s Sindri unit in Jharkhand.

The proposed initiative aims to harness India’s abundant domestic coal resources through coal gasification technology to produce synthesis gas, which can subsequently be utilised for the production of ammonia and urea. The collaboration brings together CIL’s extensive expertise in the coal sector and HURL’s experience in operating large-scale ammonia-urea fertiliser plants.

The MoU was signed in the presence of senior leadership from both organisations, including the Director (Business Development), CIL; Vice Chairman, HURL & Executive Director, CIL; Dr. Siba Prasad Mohanty, Managing Director, HURL, and other esteemed dignitaries from CIL and HURL.

The proposed collaboration represents an important step towards exploring alternative and innovative feedstock pathways for fertiliser production. By leveraging domestic coal resources, the initiative seeks to contribute to resource optimisation, energy security and fertiliser self-reliance, while exploring avenues to reduce dependence on imported fertilisers and natural gas.

The initiative is aligned with the broader national vision of enhancing Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting domestic resource utilisation, strengthening indigenous manufacturing capabilities and supporting the availability of essential agricultural inputs.

With CIL’s strength in coal production and HURL’s established capabilities in ammonia-urea manufacturing, the proposed collaboration creates a platform for combining complementary expertise and exploring a new pathway for sustainable and self-reliant fertiliser production.
