Need to promote natural farming and use of recycled water in agriculture: Bhagirath Choudhary

Bhagirath Choudhary, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, emphasized the critical role agriculture plays in India’s economy, during his address at the 6th edition of the FICCI Agri Startup Summit & Awards. He highlighted agriculture's contribution to inclusive growth, rural incomes, and food security, reiterating the government’s commitment to sustaining the sector through innovative and sustainable policies.

Emphasis on Natural Farming and Water Conservation

Choudhary stressed the importance of promoting natural farming and the use of recycled water in agriculture. “It is imperative that we should focus on promoting natural farming along with conserving water. We need to not only conserve water but promote the use of recycled water in farming. The government is working on interlinking the rivers in India; recycling of water is necessary in farming,” he said. He also underscored the significance of soil health, describing it as the foundation of sustainable agriculture and essential for a resilient future for farmers and the nation.

Government Initiatives Supporting Farmers and Startups

Choudhary highlighted government programs such as the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) – Agriculture and Allied Sector Rejuvenation (RATAAR), which aim to bolster farmers' efforts, mitigate risks, and foster agribusiness entrepreneurship. Since its launch in 2018, the scheme has supported thousands of startups.

Agri-Sure Fund and Support for Agritech Startups

Regarding agritech startups, Choudhary pointed out the government’s initiatives like the Startup India program and the recently announced Agri-Sure Fund by NABARD, designed to provide financial and technical support to agritech startups. “Agri-Sure represents a significant leap forward in our efforts to support innovative and sustainable solutions,” he added.

Hemendra Mathur, Chairman of the FICCI Task Force on Agri Startups and Technology, mentioned that the awards have supported around 150 startups in the agriculture sector. “We now have a healthy startup ecosystem in the agriculture sector, with around 6,000 active startups helping farmers in various segments including productivity, financing, insurance, marketing, and sourcing quality inputs,” he said.

The summit and awards ceremony highlighted the dynamic role of agritech startups in transforming Indian agriculture, supporting farmers, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
