Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh launches new initiatives for fisheries sector

Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Ministry introduced several new initiatives to mark the fourth anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). These initiatives aim to boost India's fisheries sector and strengthen the blue economy.

He launched the National Fisheries Development Program (NFDP) portal, which will provide support and digital IDs to fish workers, helping them access various benefits. He also released new guidelines for the PM-MKSSY, a sub-scheme of PMMSY.

Additionally, Singh unveiled new procedures for the Fisheries Cluster Development Program and announced the creation of three special clusters for pearl farming, ornamental fisheries, and seaweed farming. These clusters are intended to increase production and market access. He also set aside Rs 200 crore to make 100 coastal villages climate-friendly, promoting food security, socio-economic stability, and climate-smart livelihoods.

Singh introduced a pilot project to use drones for fish transportation, which is expected to improve inland fisheries. He also announced a center of excellence for seaweed cultivation and research, and a nucleus breeding center to enhance fish quality. Furthermore, he revealed priority projects worth Rs 721.63 crore, including aquaculture parks, fish markets, and smart fishing harbors.

Singh emphasized the government's commitment to the welfare of 30 million people involved in fisheries under the Prime Minister's leadership. He highlighted several initiatives for their benefit, such as the Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS), a vessel communication system, NFDP for sector formalization, and export value addition. He urged State and Union Territory Fisheries Departments to effectively use the funds and register fish workers with NFDP.
