Weak monsoon rainfall affected demand during the month. However, cumulative tractor sales during January-August rose 20.66 percent year-on-year to 757,782 units.

August Tractor Sales Stable, Rise 0.84 Percent YoY but Fall 25 Percent from July

After recording strong growth during the first seven months of 2026, India’s tractor retail sales remained largely stable in August. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Monday, 87,977 tractors were sold at retail outlets in August 2026, compared with 87,244 units in August 2025. In July 2026, tractor retail sales had reached 117,349 units. Thus, tractor sales increased 0.84% year-on-year in August, but declined 25.03% month-on-month from July.

The slowdown in tractor sales in August is being attributed mainly to weak monsoon conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon rainfall so far this year is around 14% below normal. Rainfall in the South Peninsular region is 27% below normal, while the East and Northeast region has recorded a 24% deficit.

According to FADA data, tractor sales reached a record 117,349 units in July. Sales during the month were 28.10% higher year-on-year and 12.10% higher compared with June. The record July sales were largely attributed to strong demand linked to the sowing of kharif crops.

Despite the slowdown in August, the overall performance of the tractor market remains strong. A total of 757,782 tractors were sold between January and August 2026. This was 20.66% higher than the 627,996 units sold during the corresponding period of 2025.

Among individual manufacturers, Mahindra & Mahindra remained the market leader with a 23.5% share of tractor retail sales. The company’s Swaraj division accounted for an additional 18.09% share. It was followed by International Tractors (Sonalika), TAFE, Escorts Kubota, John Deere, Eicher and CNH International.

The strong cumulative growth indicates that despite the August slowdown, tractor demand remains relatively robust. However, the progress of the monsoon and its impact on farm operations and kharif crop prospects will remain important factors for tractor sales in the coming months.
