Sanjeev Chaddha, the Managing Director (MD) of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), launched a high-yielding onion seeds variety developed by the Federation through its seed production programme in Maharashtra with a base of 600 farmers. This information was shared by NAFED.
The Government of India has assigned a target of 2500 quintal of onion seed production to NAFED.
NAFED says it aims to distribute these cost-effective high-yielding onion seeds to farmers through state governments, cooperative societies, farmer producer organizations (FPOs) etc.
The organization plans to expand its onion seed production programme under the flagship NAFED brand. These seeds would help farmers increase the productivity level of their crops and contribute to the attainment of the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling farmers’ income, says NAFED.
While talking about the income of the farmers at a farmers’ rally in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, on 28 February 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that it was his dream to see farmers double their income by 2022, when the country completed 75 years of its Independence. Obviously, high-yielding seeds will have a big role to play if we are to move closer to this vision.
