Paddy procurement in Haryana begins today after farmers' protest

The government procurement of paddy in Haryana started today, September 27, 2024. This decision comes after concerns arose regarding delays in the procurement process and the growing displeasure among farmers due to a previously announced extension of the procurement date. Responding to these issues, the Central Government, upon the request of the Haryana Government, decided to revise the procurement schedule. An official order was issued by the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution stating that the procurement, which was originally scheduled to start on October 1, 2024, will now begin today, September 27, 2024.

According to the statement issued by the Haryana Government, the state government had requested the Central Government to start paddy procurement, and the Central Government has agreed to start it. The paddy procurement in the state will take place from September 27 to November 11.

Earlier, the government scheduled paddy procurement to start on September 23 but then suddenly changed the date to October 1. When farmers arrived at the mandis with their paddy, they were informed about the change in procurement's date. As a result, farmers began protesting outside the mandis over the delay in procurement. Rural Voice has consistently highlighted the issue of delay in procurement and the challenges faced by farmers. This coverage brought farmers' demands to the government's attention. In response to the rising dissatisfaction among farmers and the upcoming assembly elections, the government decided to begin paddy procurement.
