New Cane Variety Creates a Buzz Among UP Farmers, 2 Lakh Single Buds Booked in 5 Minutes
Uttar Pradesh’s new early-maturing sugarcane variety CoS.23232 has received an overwhelming response from farmers, with all 200,000 single buds allocated for online booking snapped up within five minutes. The Shahjahanpur-based U.P. Council of Sugarcane Research is accelerating seed multiplication, while the new variety is expected to offer an alternative to the popular Co.0238.
Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have shown tremendous interest in the new early-maturing sugarcane variety CoS.23232, with online bookings for 200,000 single buds completed within just five minutes of the booking window opening on Friday morning.
The Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research (UPCSR), Shahjahanpur, opened online bookings at 10 am on 9 October 2026 through the official sugarcane department portal, enquiry.caneup.in. The response was so strong that the entire allocation of 200,000 single buds of the new variety was booked almost immediately, leaving many farmers unable to obtain the planting material.
According to the council, mini seed kits containing single buds of two sugarcane varieties are being made available to farmers this year. The allocation includes 200,000 single buds of CoS.23232 and 100,000 single buds of CoS.19231.
UPCSR Director Abhishek Anand said the council had initiated efforts to make planting material available to farmers within a month of the release of the new variety for cultivation.
The council is accelerating seed multiplication using techniques such as single-bud propagation and tissue culture to ensure that more farmers can access the new variety ahead of the coming planting season.
UPCSR is also preparing to organise the ‘Mithaas Mela 2026’ in October, where mini seed kits of new sugarcane varieties are expected to be distributed to farmers. Details regarding the distribution schedule and other essential information will be communicated through various publicity channels and SMS alerts.
The council has advised farmers to regularly monitor its official communication channels for updates on seed availability and distribution.
Potential Alternative to Co.0238
CoS.23232 is a fast-growing, early-maturing sugarcane variety that was released for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh in September 2026.
According to Dr Arvind Kumar, a senior scientist and breeder involved in developing the variety, it has several promising characteristics, including better germination, a higher number of tillers, more millable canes, improved yield potential and higher sugar content. He expressed confidence that the variety could emerge as a better alternative to the widely cultivated Co.0238 in Uttar Pradesh.
The new variety is expected to help farmers improve productivity and sugar recovery while offering comparatively better resistance to pests and diseases. Its performance under field conditions will be crucial in determining its wider adoption across the state.
The overwhelming response to the initial seed allocation highlights farmers’ interest in improved sugarcane varieties and the need to expand the availability of quality planting material to meet demand.
