Samunnati launches Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan to crowdsource funds and insure India’s smallholder farmers
Samunnati, a specialized agri value chain enabler, launched the Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan, a tailor-made insurance initiative to financially secure farmers from day-to-day farming risks. It has launched the campaign to cover over 50,000 smallholder farmers who are part of their FPOnEXT programme.
On October 2, Samunnati, a specialized agri value chain enabler, launched the Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan, a tailor-made insurance initiative to financially secure annadatas (farmers) from day-to-day farming risks.
On the occasion of Daan Ustav, Samunnati launched the campaign to cover over 50,000 smallholder farmers who are part of their FPOnEXT programme. In the coming year, Samunnati plans to extend these insurance benefits to over two lakh farmers by amplifying the crowdsourcing campaign in partnership with other ecosystem players.
Through the Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan, Samunnati’s vision is to insure Indian farmers from the vulnerabilities and risks associated with farming as well as to drive more awareness and adoption of insurance among India’s agrarian communities.
The insurance benefits, which will initially provide coverage up to INR 50,000 to each farmer, will be offered free of cost via FPOnEXT platform. The programme shall cover over a dozen risks such as accidental death, permanent or partial disablement, accident and hospitalization, fractures, burns, vector-borne diseases and emergency ambulance charges. Child education and marriage expenses have also been included in the insurance.
Speaking on this initiative, Anilkumar SG, Founder and CEO, Samunnati, “Insurance is considered a luxury by a large part of India’s farming communities. At Samunnati, we recognize this perception and with Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan, we aim to free our nation’s Annadatas from the risks that they encounter every day.”
He added, “By inviting Indian citizens and corporates to contribute to this thoughtful initiative, we are determined to support and protect smallholder farmers as well as their families. We look forward to partnering with other stakeholders in giving back to this community and making their lives risk-proof in the coming years.”
Started in 2014 as the only specialized holistic agri value chain enabler, Samunnati is steered by one vision ‘to make market work for the smallholder farmers’ by making the value chains operate at a higher equilibrium. It provides holistic, innovative and customized solutions across agri commerce and agri finance for the value chain players.
Samunnati’s growth-oriented approach, known as AMLA (Aggregation, Market Linkages and Advisory services), empowers the agricultural community by helping its members build better market linkages and use relevant technology and skills for growth. Headquartered in Chennai, Samunnati has its presence in more than 100 agri value chains spread over 22 states in India.
