A joint press statement issued by the All India Agricultural And Rural Workers’ Unions has called upon voters in five poll-bound states to defeat the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections, alleging that the party’s policies have adversely impacted rural and working-class communities.
As elections approach in Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, the unions claimed that a BJP victory would lead to a rise in communal politics and a weakening of welfare measures. The statement criticized recent labour reforms and the replacement of MGNREGA with a new scheme, alleging that these changes undermine employment guarantees and workers’ rights.
The unions also raised concerns over agricultural policies, including the proposed Seeds Bill and Electricity Bill 2025, stating that these would increase input costs for small and marginal farmers. They argued that such measures would further strain an already vulnerable agrarian workforce, much of which remains unorganised.
Highlighting Kerala as an example, the statement praised the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government for achieving better human development outcomes and urged voters in the state to continue supporting left-oriented policies. It further claimed that states like Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu have historically resisted BJP’s political approach, while appealing to voters in Assam and Puducherry to “oust” the party from power.
The unions concluded with a call for agricultural and rural workers to actively participate in the electoral process and support anti-BJP alliances, particularly left candidates, whom they described as a strong alternative to what they termed “corporate-communal politics.”
The statement was endorsed by representatives of several affiliated organisations, reflecting a coordinated effort to mobilise rural voters ahead of the elections.
