Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan released a Mother Sanction of Rs 10,021.42 crore to 12 states under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), aimed at accelerating the government’s “Housing for All” target by March 2029. The states receiving the sanction include Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing the event, Chouhan said that against the target of constructing 4.95 crore houses under PMAY-G, approvals for 3.91 crore houses have already been granted, while construction of more than 3.05 crore houses has been completed so far.

“When a house is good, life becomes easier. We are not merely constructing houses, but creating homes supported by roads, electricity, drinking water, LPG connections and toilets,” he said.

The minister said the Centre is working to improve the quality of life of rural families through convergence of multiple welfare schemes linked with housing development.

Highlighting the role of the scheme in women empowerment, Chouhan said nearly 75 per cent of the houses sanctioned under PMAY-G are either registered in the name of women or jointly owned by them. He said this has strengthened women’s dignity, social security and financial inclusion in rural areas.

The minister also urged states to expedite the completion of houses currently under construction, ensure timely utilization of sanctioned funds and address pending grievances without delay. He noted that some states are yet to complete approvals in line with their targets for 2024-25 and 2025-26 and asked them to complete the process by June 30, 2026.

Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Rohit Kansal said states have played a key role in effective implementation of the rural housing scheme. He informed that a Mother Sanction of Rs 11,121 crore had already been released earlier for FY 2026-27 and the latest release of over Rs 10,021 crore would further support faster implementation.

Kansal added that the housing target for the current financial year is nearly three times higher than last year and expressed confidence that it would be achieved through coordinated efforts between the Centre and states.
