Trump Imposes Additional 25% Tariff on India Over Russian Oil Imports, Total Tariff Now 50%

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, effectively doubling the total tariff rate to 50%. The move, announced less than 14 hours before the initial tariffs were set to take effect, comes in response to India’s continued import of oil from Russia.

India is the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer. Over the past six months, Russia remained the top supplier to India, accounting for about 35% of its overall oil imports.

In a Tuesday interview with CNBC, Trump said, “India has not been a good trading partner because they do a lot of business with us, but we don't do business with them. So we settled on 25 percent, but I think I'm going to raise that rate quite substantially in the next 24 hours.”

Trump had already imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods entering the U.S. With this latest order, the total tariff on Indian products now stands at 50%—20 percentage points higher than the tariff on China and 21 points higher than that on Pakistan.

In the executive order signed earlier today, Trump wrote: “I find that the Government of India is currently, directly or indirectly, importing oil from the Russian Federation… In my judgment, I determine it necessary to impose an ad valorem duty on imports of articles from India.”

In response to the criticism, the Indian government had said that many Western nations, including the United States, continue to import goods from Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that India’s oil purchases are "a necessity compelled by the global market situation," while countries criticizing India "indulge in trade with Russia" for products that are not "a vital compulsion."
