India’s largest milk marketing cooperative Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF or Amul) and Mother Dairy have increased the rates of full-cream milk by Rs 2 per litre. With this increase, the price of Amul Gold, the full-cream milk from Amul, has gone up to Rs 64 per litre. Also, the Mother Dairy full-cream milk will now cost Rs 63 per litre. Mother Dairy has also increased the price of its cow milk by Rs 2 per litre to Rs 55 per litre. The increase in price has come into effect for Amul milk from October 15 and that of Mother Dairy from October 16.
The Amul milk price has gone up in all markets except Gujarat. These markets include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
When asked about the increase in milk price, one of the officials from Amul told Rural Voice that the price increase was only for its full-cream milk that is marketed under the Amul Gold brand. The decision to increase the price has been taken on account of rise in cost on the production cost of milk, cattle feed and other related expenditures. No increase has been made in the prices of other fresh milk variants. The official said that the milk prices had to be increased due to the rise in the procurement cost of milk. This increase has been made keeping in mind the farmers’ interests in the wake of the increase in cattle fodder. Amul pays 75-80 per cent of the price it receives from the consumers to the milk-producing farmers.
Speaking about the price increase, the official spokesman of Mother dairy said to Rural Voice, “the cost of milk procured by the dairy industry from the farmers has gone up by about Rs 3 per litre over the past two months. This increase in milk prices has been made in view of this and other costs. The troubles have been compounded due to the scarcity of rain in several parts of the country and increasing fodder prices. We had to increase these prices to maintain the supply of better-quality milk to the consumers and to protect the farmers’ interests.” It is due to this that the decision has been made to increase the prices of full-cream milk and cow milk with effect from 16 October 2022.
Earlier, Amul and Mother Dairy had increased the price of all their variants by Rs 2 per litre on 17 August 2022. Before that price rise, Amul’s full-cream milk was priced at Rs 60 per litre. GCMMF had increased its prices at Ahmedabad and in Saurashtra in Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, West Bengal, Mumbai and those places in India where Amul markets its fresh milk. Mother Dairy, too, had increased its milk prices by Rs 2 per litre at the same time.
