Kharif MSP Announced: Paddy Support Price Raised by Rs 72, Maize by Rs 10
The government has announced MSPs for 14 kharif crops for the 2026-27 marketing season, raising paddy prices by Rs 72 per quintal and maize by Rs 10. Sunflower seed, cotton and nigerseed saw the highest hikes. The Centre said MSPs remain at least 50
The government has announced the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for 14 kharif crops for the 2026-27 marketing season. The MSP for common variety paddy, the main kharif crop, has been fixed at Rs 2,441 per quintal, up by Rs 72 from last year’s Rs 2,369 per quintal. Among all crops, sunflower seed recorded the highest MSP increase of Rs 622 per quintal, followed by cotton at Rs 557 and nigerseed at Rs 515 per quintal.
The government has estimated the production cost of paddy at Rs 1,627 per quintal, making the MSP around 50 per cent higher than the cost of production. The MSP for Grade-A paddy has also been increased by Rs 72, from Rs 2,389 last year to Rs 2,461 per quintal.
The minimum support price (MSP) for the hybrid variety of jowar has been increased by Rs 324 per quintal. It has risen to Rs 4,023 per quintal from Rs 3,699 last year. The MSP for the Maldandi variety of jowar has been fixed at Rs 4,073 per quintal, which is also Rs 324 higher than the previous year.
The MSP for bajra has been increased by Rs 125 per quintal, rising from Rs 2,775 to Rs 2,900 per quintal. The new MSP for ragi has been fixed at Rs 5,205 per quintal, which is Rs 319 higher than last year’s Rs 4,886 per quintal. The MSP for maize has been raised by only Rs 10 per quintal, from Rs 2,400 to Rs 2,410 per quintal.
For pulses, the minimum support price (MSP) of tur (arhar) has been fixed at Rs 8,450 per quintal. It was Rs 8,000 last year, reflecting an increase of Rs 450 per quintal. The new MSP for moong has been fixed at Rs 8,780 per quintal, which is only Rs 12 higher than last year’s Rs 8,768 per quintal. However, the MSP for urad has been raised significantly by Rs 400, from Rs 7,800 to Rs 8,200 per quintal.
Among oilseeds, the MSP for groundnut has been increased by Rs 254, from Rs 7,263 to Rs 7,517 per quintal. The MSP for sunflower seed has been raised by Rs 622, from Rs 7,721 to Rs 8,343 per quintal. The MSP for soybean (yellow) has gone up by Rs 380, from Rs 5,328 to Rs 5,708 per quintal. Sesame MSP has been increased by Rs 500, from Rs 9,846 to Rs 10,346 per quintal. Nigerseed MSP has been raised by Rs 515, from Rs 9,537 to Rs 10,052 per quintal.
For commercial crops, the MSP for cotton has been increased by Rs 557 for both medium staple and long staple varieties. The MSP for medium staple cotton has risen from Rs 7,710 to Rs 8,267 per quintal, while the MSP for long staple cotton has been increased from Rs 8,110 to Rs 8,667 per quintal.
The government said that in the 2018-19 Budget, it had announced fixing MSPs at one-and-a-half times the average cost of production, and the MSPs for the 2026-27 marketing season are in line with that commitment. According to the government’s estimates, the MSP for moong is 61 per cent higher than the cost of production, while bajra and maize MSPs are 56 per cent higher and tur MSP is 54 per cent above production costs. The government has claimed that the margin for the remaining crops is also around 50 per cent.
