Wheat Procurement has crossed 150 lakh tonnes in the current rabi season
According to the data of the Food Ministry, till April 22, 61.07 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured in Punjab. On the other hand, according to the figures of Punjab State Agriculture Marketing Board’s latest data 72.07 lakh tonnes of wheat has been procured there. In the last season, the total government procurement of wheat in Punjab was 96.45 lakh tonnes. Government procurement in Punjab is likely to cross 100 lakh tonnes this year.
In the current rabi marketing season (2023-24), the government procurement of wheat has crossed 150 lakh tonnes. According to the government procurement data received by Rural Voice, till April 22, 2023, government procurement of 149.75 lakh tonnes had been done. Adding the latest figures of the states, the government procurement of wheat has crossed 150 lakh tonnes.
According to the data of the Food Ministry, till April 22 last year, 126.71 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured by the government. The government has set a procurement target of 341.50 lakh tonnes of wheat for the current Rabi marketing season.
Procurement is going well in Punjab, but in Madhya Pradesh, which is a major contributor to government procurement, the pace of procurement is not that fast. In the last rabi marketing season (2022-23), the government had set a target of procuring 444 lakh tonnes of wheat but the government procurement could reach only 187.92 lakh tonnes. At the same time, in the year 2021-22 wheat procurement reached at 433.44 lakh tonnes.
In the last rabi season, a sudden rise in temperature before the crop ripened had resulted in a drop in wheat production and government procurement had dropped to a decade-low level. On the other hand, wheat prices had crossed Rs 3000 per quintal in December 2022 against the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2015 per quintal. The MSP of wheat for the current rabi marketing season (2023-24) is Rs 2125 per quintal.

According to government figures, till April 22, the government has procured 47.43 lakh tonnes of wheat in Haryana. On the other hand, in Madhya Pradesh, 40.18 lakh tonnes of wheat has been procured by the government till the said date. Till April 22, the government has procured only 80,931 tonnes of wheat in Uttar Pradesh, the country's largest wheat producing state. Government has procured 17,043 tonnes of wheat in Rajasthan, 6883 tonnes in Chandigarh, 577 tonnes in Himachal Pradesh, 88 tonnes in Uttarakhand and 160 tonnes in Bihar.

According to government data, out of the total government procurement of 149,75,213 tonnes of wheat till April 22, the Food Corporation of India has procured 3,86,969 tonnes of wheat while state agencies have procured 145,88,244 tonnes of wheat. A total of 185.46 lakh tonnes of wheat arrived in the mandis during this period.
In the current season, there is a huge difference in the price of wheat among the states in Madhya Pradesh. There, wheat prices have been in the range of Rs 1800 to Rs 2700 per quintal against the MSP of Rs 2125. The price of wheat in Haryana ranged from Rs 2125 to Rs 2130 per quintal. In Uttar Pradesh price ranges is 2110 to 2250 per quintal. Whereas in Rajasthan, wheat prices ranged from Rs 1850 to Rs 2601 per quintal.
