Parameswaran Iyer to take over as NITI Aayog CEO; Amitabh Kant’s tenure ends on June 30

Iyer will replace Amitabh Kant, who is set to retire on June 30 after six years of heading the organization. According to the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Iyer’s tenure will be “for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier”.

The government has appointed retired IAS officer Parameswaran Iyer as the new CEO of NITI Aayog. Iyer will replace Amitabh Kant, who is set to retire on June 30 after six years of heading the organization. According to the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Iyer’s tenure will be “for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier”.

Iyer has been the secretary of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. He was also the head of the Swachh Bharat Mission. According to the order, Iyer’s appointment will be “on the same terms and conditions as were applicable in respect of” Amitabh Kant.

An IAS officer of the 1981 batch, Iyer belonged to the Uttar Pradesh (UP) cadre. He resigned from the IAS in 2009 and then came back as secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DoDWS) in 2016. He has previously worked as a Senior Rural Water Sanitation Specialist at the United Nations (UN) between April 1998 and February 2006.

The tenure of Amitabh Kant, the current CEO of NITI Aayog, comes to an end on June 30. He had been appointed for two years on 17 February 2016. Later he was given an extension till 30 June 2019. A second extension was given to him till June 2021 and a third one till 30 June 2022. Kant has played a significant role in formulating policies like Digital India, disinvestment, Aspirational District Programme and in sectors like e-vehicles.
