Smartphone bonanza for 400k ‘anganwadi’ staff in UP!

According to the state, there are about 189,000 anganwadi centres in UP with a staff strength of nearly 400,000 at present.

Furthering the ‘Digital India’ agenda to the state’s hinterland, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to equip nearly 400,000 ‘anganwadi’ workers with the latest smartphones.
In the current crisis of Covid-19 pandemic, the anganwadi network lent invaluable support in controlling the spread of the infection in rural areas by creating mass awareness.
Launched by the Centre in 1975 as part of the Integrated Child Development Services programme to combat child hunger and malnutrition in India, anganwadi is a type of rural childcare centre. In Hindi, anganwadi would refer to a ‘courtyard shelter’. Now, it is also used for imparting education in the remote villages.
Deployed to facilitate women and children issues of healthcare and nutrition in the countryside, the anganwadi workers have been a vital tool in the state government’s objective of effectively implementing the UP model of corona control.
Chairing a high level meeting here, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to distribute smartphones to all the anganwadi workers in UP. This would provide them easy accessibility to important data related to women and children schemes.
According to the state, there are about 189,000 anganwadi centres in UP with a staff strength of nearly 400,000 at present.
At the same time, the Yogi government will train these workers in harnessing the power of smartphones for better utility and application in the field tasks. This in turn will facilitate the anganwadi staff to lend maximum transparency in the implementation of the schemes. Besides, the decisions related to schemes and programmes could be taken on the basis of data without delay, thus reducing any scope of corruption.
The UP government is of the firm opinion that with smartphones, the schemes in rural areas could be implemented in a more effective and transparent manner.
Meanwhile, the state has also launched the ‘Mukhya Mantri Bal Seva Yojana’ for those children, who have lost their parents to Covid, as well as children who are suffering from non-Covid diseases. The smartphone initiative will help in the implementation of this ambitious scheme too in a seamless fashion.
