Most exit polls predict BJP victory in Delhi Assembly elections

After voting for the Delhi Assembly elections on Wednesday, all eyes are now on the results. Various exit polls predict a victory for the BJP, while the ruling Aam Aadmi Party appears to be struggling to replicate its previous performance.

Out of 11 exit polls, nine indicate a majority for the BJP, while two predict the AAP will form the government. Congress has not shown any significant gains compared to the previous elections. Notably, in the 2020 Delhi elections, most exit polls proved to be inaccurate.

The combined results of all exit polls—the poll of polls—project 36-42 seats for the BJP, 27-33 for the AAP, and 0-1 seat for Congress. Some exit polls suggest a close contest between the AAP and BJP, but the BJP holds the advantage.

As of 5 PM on Wednesday, voter turnout in the 70-seat Delhi Assembly stood at 57.70%. The results will be declared on February 8. A party needs 36 seats to form a government. Currently, the AAP has 62 MLAs, the BJP eight, and the Congress none.

Many AAP leaders dismissed the exit polls, while BJP leaders expressed confidence in their victory. If the BJP secures a majority, it will return to power in Delhi after 27 years. The last time the BJP ruled Delhi was in 1993 when it won 49 seats and had three chief ministers over five years—Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj. Since then, the BJP has remained out of power in the Delhi government.
