Tractor Retail Sales Hit Record 79,285 Units in October, Mahindra Retains Lead

India’s tractor market recorded its highest-ever retail sales for October 2026, with registrations reaching 79,285 units, up 3.10% from 76,898 units in the same month last year. The growth came despite a decline in overall automobile retail sales, reflecting continued demand for agricultural machinery in rural markets.

According to retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), tractor sales also increased 3.09% month-on-month from 76,906 units in September 2026. The October performance marked a new monthly record for the segment.

Rural markets remained the principal driver of tractor demand, accounting for 80.2% of total registrations during the month. Rural tractor sales grew 5.83% year-on-year, while urban registrations declined 6.62%. On a month-on-month basis, rural sales increased 1.53%, compared with a stronger 9.96% growth in urban markets.

The segment has also maintained strong momentum during the current financial year. Between April and October 2026, cumulative tractor retail sales reached 6,37,620 units, registering growth of 17.72% over 5,41,624 units in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Tractor registrations during the Navratri festival period, from October 11 to 20, stood at 23,036 units, up 2.43% from 22,489 units during Navratri last year. Sales were 22.05% higher than the 18,875 units recorded during Navratri 2024.

The performance of the tractor segment stood in contrast to the broader automobile retail market, which recorded a 23.80% year-on-year decline in October. FADA attributed the overall market contraction largely to a shift in the festive calendar, as Diwali fell entirely in November this year, unlike October last year.

Among manufacturers, Mahindra and Mahindra retained its leadership position. Its tractor division sold 18,263 units, accounting for 23.03% of the market, compared with 16,967 units and a 22.06% share in October 2025. Its Swaraj division recorded sales of 14,206 units, giving it a 17.92% market share, against 13,379 units and 17.40% share a year earlier. Together, the two divisions accounted for nearly 41% of total tractor retail sales.
