Government wheat procurement for RMS 2026-27 has reached around 33 million tonnes, nearing the revised target of 34.497 million tonnes. Procurement remains slow in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan despite extended operations and state-level bonuses.
Wheat procurement in the Rabi Marketing Season 2026-27 appears to be nearing the target. The government had set a target of procuring 34.497 million tonnes of wheat at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) this year, and so far around 33 million tonnes have already been procured. In the previous season, total wheat procurement stood at 30.035 million tonnes. Initially, the government had fixed a procurement target of 30.3 million tonnes for RMS 2026-27, almost equal to last year’s level, but later revised it upward by nearly 14 percent to 34.497 million tonnes.
As in previous years, Punjab has recorded the highest procurement this season as well. Against the target of 12.2 million tonnes, a total of 12.3 million tonnes of wheat has been procured in the state. Wheat procurement operations have now been completed in Punjab. Procurement has also ended in Haryana, where 8.089 million tonnes of wheat were purchased against the target of 7.5 million tonnes. This year, the central government fixed the MSP for wheat at Rs 2,585 per quintal.
Among other major states, procurement is still underway in Madhya Pradesh. There, wheat procurement was initially scheduled to continue until May 23, but the deadline has now been extended to May 28. According to the state’s Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister, Govind Singh Rajput, 9.331 million tonnes of wheat had been procured till Wednesday. The state had originally set a procurement target of 7.8 million tonnes, which was later revised upward to 10 million tonnes. Farmers in the state are also being given a bonus of Rs 40 per quintal over and above the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Wheat procurement is still ongoing in the mandis of Uttar Pradesh as well. The state had set a target of procuring 2.5 million tonnes of wheat during the entire season, but so far only 1.498 million tonnes has been purchased. This means only 59.86 percent of the target has been achieved so far. Procurement in the state had started on March 30.
Procurement has also been slow in Rajasthan. The state had set a target of procuring 2.3 million tonnes of wheat, but until a few days ago only 1.625 million tonnes had been purchased. The state government had announced a bonus of Rs 150 per quintal over and above the MSP.
