21.8 Lakh Tonnes of Fertiliser Imported Since Start of Iran War; Domestic Production at 86.2 Lakh Tonnes
Since the outbreak of the Iran war, India has imported 21.8 lakh tonnes of fertilisers, while domestic production has stood at 86.2 lakh tonnes. To ensure adequate fertiliser availability for the Kharif 2026 season, the government has floated global tenders for DAP, NPK, TSP, ammonia and sulphur.
India has imported 21.8 lakh tonnes of fertilisers since the start of the Iran war. More than half of these imports consist of urea alone. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, some deals for Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and NPK fertilisers have been concluded, and the consignments are expected to arrive in India during May and June. Global tenders have also been floated for Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and ammonium sulphate to ensure adequate fertiliser availability during the peak season.
During an inter-ministerial meeting, the Petroleum Ministry stated that since the outbreak of the war, India has imported 13.29 lakh tonnes of urea, 0.88 lakh tonnes of DAP, 4.09 lakh tonnes of NPK, and 3.49 lakh tonnes of Muriate of Potash (MOP). Thus, total fertiliser imports since the beginning of the war have reached 21.8 lakh tonnes.
During the same period, domestic fertiliser production stood at 86.2 lakh tonnes. This included production of 52.1 lakh tonnes of urea, 7.03 lakh tonnes of DAP, 17.33 lakh tonnes of NPK, and 9.76 lakh tonnes of Single Super Phosphate (SSP) fertilisers.
Since the beginning of the war, combined domestic production and imports have led to an increase of 108 lakh tonnes in fertiliser stocks. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has estimated the total fertiliser requirement for the Kharif 2026 season at 390.54 lakh tonnes. At present, 200.98 lakh tonnes of fertilisers are available, which is 51 percent of the total requirement. Usually, only 33 percent of the required fertilisers are available at this time of the year.
According to the ministry, India has placed orders for 13.5 lakh tonnes of DAP and 7 lakh tonnes of NPK fertilisers. These consignments are expected to reach Indian ports by May and June. In addition, Indian fertiliser companies have floated tenders to procure 4 lakh tonnes of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and 3 lakh tonnes of ammonium sulphate. Indian companies have also issued global tenders for a total of 5.36 lakh tonnes of ammonia and 5.94 lakh tonnes of sulphur.
