Foodgrain production to be record 315.72 mt: 4th AE 2021-22

The production of foodgrains in the country is estimated at 315.72 mt, higher by 4.98 mt than the 310.74 mt during 2020-21. Also, the production during 2021-22 is higher by 25 mt than the previous five years’ (2016-17 to 2020-21) average production of foodgrains. Record production is estimated for rice, maize, gram, pulses, rapeseed and mustard, oilseeds and sugarcane. However, the production is estimated to be less than last year in the case of wheat, nutri/coarse cereals and cotton.

Foodgrain production to be record 315.72 mt: 4th AE 2021-22

According to the fourth advance estimate (AE) of production of major agricultural crops for the year 2021-22 released by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the production of foodgrains in the country is estimated at 315.72 million tonnes (mt), higher by 4.98 mt than the 310.74 mt during 2020-21. Also, the production during 2021-22 is higher by 25 mt than the previous five years’ (2016-17 to 2020-21) average production of foodgrains.

Record production is estimated of rice, maize, gram, pulses, rapeseed and mustard, oilseeds and sugarcane. Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has said that this record production of so many crops is the result of the farmer-friendly policies of the Central Government under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as the tireless hard work of the farmers and the diligence of the scientists.

However, the production is estimated to be less than last year in the case of wheat, nutri/coarse cereals and cotton. The crop year in India runs from July to June.

As per the 4th AE, rice production during 2021-22 is estimated at 130.29 mt (record), which is higher by 13.85 mt than the last five years’ average production of 116.44 mt. In 2020-21, it stood at 124.37 mt.

The production of wheat during 2021-22 is estimated at 106.84 mt. It is higher by 2.96 mt than the last five years’ average wheat production of 103.88 mt. However, it is lower than the 109.59 mt in 2020-21.

The production of nutri/coarse cereals is estimated at 50.90 mt, which is higher by 4.32 mt than the last five years’ average production of 46.57 mt. However, it is also lower than the 2020-21 figure of 51.32 mt.

Total pulses production during 2021-22 is estimated at a record 27.69 mt, which is higher by 3.87 mt than the last five years’ average production of 23.82 mt. In 2020-21, it stood at 25.46 mt.

Total oilseeds production in the country during 2021-22 is estimated at a record 37.70 mt, which is higher by 1.75 mt than the production of 35.95 mt during 2020-21. Further, the production of oilseeds during 2021-22 is higher by 5.01 mt than the average oilseeds production.

The total production of sugarcane in the country during 2021-22 is estimated at a record 431.81 mt, which is higher by 58.35 mt than the average sugarcane production of 373.46 mt. In 2020-21, it stood at 405.4 mt.

The production of cotton 31.20 million bales (each of 170 kg), which is much less than the 35.25 million bales produced in 2020-21.

The production of jute and mesta during 2021-22 is estimated at 10.32 million bales (each of 180 kg), which is much higher than 9.35 bales in 2020-21.
