The Digital Public Infrastructure for Agriculture (Agristack) scheme is being implemented by the central government to digitize agriculture. Under this initiative, state governments are conducting a campaign to create a Farmer Registry and issue Farmer IDs. In the future, benefits such as PM-Kisan, crop insurance, and other schemes will be accessible to farmers only through their Farmer ID. Therefore, obtaining a Farmer ID is essential for farmers.

Without a Farmer ID, farmers will not be eligible for agriculture-related scheme benefits. The Farmer Registry is mandatory to receive the installment of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme after December 31, 2024.

This raises the question: when Aadhaar has already been created and linked to many schemes, why is there a need for a separate ID for farmers? The proliferation of different cards and IDs for various government departments and schemes raise question on the relevance of Aadhaar.

In Uttar Pradesh, a special campaign is underway until January 31, 2025, to prepare the Farmer Registry. The government claims that the Farmer Registry will simplify the distribution of scheme benefits to farmers and facilitate accurate data collection, aiding policy-making. With the Farmer ID, farmers will not need repeated KYC updates.

However, awareness about the Farmer Registry remains limited among farmers. As a result, most have yet to obtain their Farmer ID. The government needs to expedite its efforts in this regard. Additionally, technical issues with the registry portal have hindered progress in creating Farmer IDs.

Bijnor District Agriculture Officer Jasvir Singh Tewatia informed Rural Voice that farmers can obtain their Farmer IDs through Lekhpal, Jan Seva Kendra, or the mobile app. Awareness campaigns are also being conducted to educate farmers about this initiative.
