To usher in the ‘Blue Revolution’ by promoting fisheries and creating employment opportunities, the Uttar Pradesh government has planned to distribute more than 200 million fish seeds among those engaged in pisciculture.

The mammoth task will be completed in the next 100 days, according to a government official.

The Yogi Adityanath government 2.0 is encouraging small and micro units for self-employment opportunities. As such, it is promoting fish farming, which generates more profit with less capital.

Quality fish seeds will be supplied to farmers from fish farms/hatcheries run by the UP Fisheries Development Corporation as well as private hatcheries.

This will increase fish production and provide sustainable livelihood to aquaculture farmers.

Moreover, the government will promote River Ranching, under which 0.5mn fish fingerlings of varied species will be released in rivers. This will generate employment and boost the income of the fishermen's community in the state.

Almost 4,000 samples of water and soil from various ponds will be tested by the government. On the basis of reports, decisions regarding the required investment and steps will be taken to optimize the sectoral benefits.

Meanwhile, the state plans to cover an additional aqua area of 750 hectares for fisheries. Fish seeds will be stored in the allotted ponds of the Gram Sabha as also private ponds.

Apart from aquaculture, the UP government is keen to promote potato cultivation in Eastern UP. A potato centre of excellence (CoE) will be set up at Kushinagar to provide high-quality potato seeds. It is aimed at facilitating higher horticultural yield and augmenting farm income.

The CoE will organize knowledge workshops for potato farmers to discuss common issues with agricultural experts and offer practical solutions. Farmers will be able to get information about getting maximum production by using minimum water.

The agricultural sector has been accorded priority by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the high-stakes 2024 Lok Sabha polls, which are just two years away. As such, the farm sector schemes across different segments are being undertaken with full vigour and allocated adequate funds for timely completion.
