India’s Dairy Sector Remains Steady Despite West Asia Crisis, Says Government
India’s dairy sector remains unaffected by the West Asia crisis, with stable milk supply and prices, the government said. Adequate fuel, gas, and packaging materials have ensured uninterrupted operations. Proactive monitoring, policy support, and coordination with stakeholders are helping maintain smooth functioning and resilience in the dairy value chain.
Even as geopolitical tensions in West Asia raise concerns over supply chains, the Indian government has assured that the country’s dairy sector continues to operate smoothly without any disruption. Officials confirmed that milk production, processing, and distribution remain stable, with no impact on prices or availability across markets.
At an inter-ministerial briefing, Puja Rustagi from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying stated that there are no shortages of essential inputs such as fuel, gas, or plastic packaging materials. She emphasized that milk procurement and payments to farmers have continued seamlessly throughout the crisis period.
India, the world’s largest milk producer, recorded an output of 24.8 crore tonnes in 2024-25, reflecting the sector’s strong foundation. To ensure continued stability, the government has been actively monitoring developments and engaging with state milk federations and unions. A review meeting held recently assessed the potential impact of the crisis and confirmed that supply chains remain intact.
On the energy front, timely intervention by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has ensured uninterrupted fuel supply. As per an April 2026 directive, dairy units are receiving 70% of their earlier LPG allocation, preventing operational disruptions. At the same time, dairy processors have been encouraged to switch to piped natural gas wherever possible to reduce dependence on LPG.
Packaging material availability has also remained stable. Supplies of key inputs like polypropylene and polystyrene have been secured, addressing concerns raised by the sector. The government is coordinating closely with suppliers to maintain smooth distribution nationwide.
Additionally, a dedicated digital portal launched in March 2026 is helping authorities track real-time availability of milk, fuel, and packaging materials. Simplified export procedures have also been introduced to support trade operations.
