The Central Government has given permission to export 50,000 tonnes of onion to Bangladesh through NCEL.
NCEL will be in consultation with the Department of Consumer Affairs regarding the modalities of onion export to Bangladesh. The ban on export of onion continues, but the government has allowed export of onion in fixed quantities on the request of some friendly countries.
To control onion prices in the domestic market, the central government had imposed a ban on onion export on December 8, which is in effect till March 31.
Onion growers and traders are demanding that the government lift the ban on export. But this ban has not been lifted yet.
For the past several days, there was speculation about the lifting of the ban on onion export. But currently the ban continues. Meanwhile, permission has been given to export about 64,000 tonnes of onion through the cooperative company.
The Government of India has also permitted export of 30,000 tonnes of non-Basmati white rice to Tanzania and 80,000 tonnes of broken rice to Djibouti and Guinea Bissau.
