Mother Dairy’s New Initiative: Cow Milk to Be Sold in a Naturally Degradable Pouch

Mother Dairy has launched a naturally degradable milk pouch, designed to decompose in soil within two to three years without affecting milk quality, shelf life, or prices. The eco-friendly packaging, developed after over four years of research, will be introduced for the company’s Cow Milk variant in Delhi-NCR from World Environment Day, June 5.

Mother Dairy’s New Initiative: Cow Milk to Be Sold in a Naturally Degradable Pouch

In a major step towards environmental sustainability, leading dairy company Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Private Limited on Tuesday launched a new milk pouch that naturally degrades in soil. The company claims it is India’s first milk packaging designed to decompose naturally in soil within two to three years.

Mother Dairy, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), unveiled the new packaging at a press conference. Dr Meenesh Shah, Chairman of NDDB and Mother Dairy, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to a future-ready and sustainable ecosystem. Initially, the new packaging will be introduced for Mother Dairy’s Cow Milk variant sold in the Delhi-NCR region from June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day.

“The newly introduced packaging is designed to naturally degrade in soil within a few years rather than centuries, and importantly, this transition is being undertaken without any impact on consumer milk prices,” Shah added.

According to the company, the new milk pouch uses a first-of-its-kind degradable packaging innovation that enables the material to transform into bioavailable wax, which is naturally broken down by microbes present in the soil to turn it into natural elements.

Mother Dairy Managing Director Jayatheertha Chary said, “For over five decades, Mother Dairy has remained at the forefront of innovation in the dairy sector. Driven by this commitment, we undertook over four years of research to develop a naturally degradable milk pouch that leaves no trace of plastics in the environment.”

He explained that while the new pouches will continue to be recyclable, their distinguishing feature lies in their ability to degrade into natural elements after disposal, helping address the growing challenge of fugitive plastic pollution.

“This packaging innovation has been designed to ensure a seamless consumer experience, with no changes required in the way consumers store, handle, or dispose of the milk pouch. Importantly, the new packaging will have no impact on the milk’s quality, shelf life, or taste,” he added.

Alongside the sustainability-focused packaging innovation, Mother Dairy is also introducing a refreshed design language across its milk portfolio. The redesigned packs will feature a new brand element called the “Note of Care,” inspired by the company’s iconic logo and aimed at strengthening its connection with consumers through relatable everyday messages.

Established in 1974 under the Operation Flood programme, Mother Dairy is among India’s leading dairy companies and sells approximately 5.5 million litres of milk every day across multiple states. Apart from dairy products, the company markets edible oils under the “Dhara” brand and fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen products, snacks, pulps, and concentrates under the “Safal” brand.

The initiative could prove to be a significant step towards managing plastic waste in the dairy industry. Given the large number of milk pouches used daily across India and the waste they generate, environmentally friendly packaging innovations are increasingly being viewed as an important solution for sustainable waste management.
