Cabinet approved Rs 2,481 crore National Mission on Natural Farming

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the launch of the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) as a standalone Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare. With a total outlay of Rs. 2481 crore, including Rs. 1584 crore from the Government of India and Rs. 897 crore from state contributions, the initiative will run until 2025-26.

The NMNF aims to promote chemical-free farming practices rooted in traditional knowledge and local agro-ecological principles. It seeks to empower farmers with sustainable methods that reduce their dependency on external inputs, enhance soil health, and foster biodiversity. The initiative is designed to support farmers in cultivating healthy, nutritious food while reducing input costs.

Over the next two years, the scheme will be rolled out in 15,000 clusters across Gram Panchayats, reaching up to 1 crore farmers and covering 7.5 lakh hectares. A network of Bio-input Resource Centres (BRCs) will provide easy access to natural farming inputs, while around 2,000 Model Demonstration Farms will be established at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Agricultural Universities (AUs), and farmers' fields to train farmers in natural farming practices.

The scheme also envisions the deployment of 30,000 Krishi Sakhis/CRPs for on-ground mobilization and awareness campaigns. Farmers will be trained in creating NF inputs such as Jeevamrit and Beejamrit, and efforts will be made to integrate local livestock and diversified cropping systems. In addition, the scheme will work towards reducing health risks from chemicals, improving resilience to climate risks, and enhancing soil carbon content and water use efficiency.

A simple certification system will allow farmers to market their produce, supported by dedicated branding. Real-time monitoring of the mission’s progress will be done through an online portal, ensuring transparency and effectiveness.

The NMNF will also explore convergence with existing government and international schemes to improve livestock populations, develop market linkages, and integrate students through educational programs on natural farming. This ambitious mission is set to transform Indian agriculture by promoting sustainability, climate resilience, and healthy food for future generations.
