India and Malaysia to Strengthen Agricultural Cooperation with Focus on Oil Palm
India and Malaysia have decided to enhance cooperation in the agriculture sector, particularly focusing on oil palm. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Malaysian Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani discussed this during a meeting in New Delhi, emphasizing the National Mission on Edible Oil- Oil Palm and other agricultural issues.
In a significant move to bolster agricultural ties, India and Malaysia have decided to enhance cooperation, particularly in the oil palm sector. This development was discussed during a meeting between Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Malaysian Minister of Plantations and Commodities, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who is currently on a visit to India from July 16-19, 2024.
The high-level discussion took place at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, where both sides explored various avenues to deepen bilateral agricultural cooperation. A key focus of the meeting was the National Mission on Edible Oil-Oil Palm (NMEO), a major initiative by India to increase domestic production of edible oils and reduce dependence on imports.
In addition to oil palm, the ministers addressed market access issues related to agriculture and allied products. They emphasized the importance of institutionalizing cooperation in agriculture and leveraging digital technology in the plantation sector to boost productivity and sustainability.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressing gratitude to Minister Johari Abdul Ghani for his fruitful visit to India. He conveyed optimism for continued and strengthened cooperation in agriculture and other sectors, paving the way for mutual growth and development.
