Unemployment Rises in April, Rural India Faces Job Crisis As Well As Labour Participation Rate

India’s unemployment rate rose to 5.2 percent in April 2026, marking the second consecutive monthly increase. Concerning trends were observed in both unemployment and labour force participation in rural areas. The employment crisis appeared to deepen among women and rural men, while urban areas recorded marginal improvement.

India’s unemployment rate stood at 5.2 percent in April 2026. According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the unemployment rate increased for the second consecutive month. It was 4.9 percent in February 2026 and 5.1 percent in March. The unemployment rate was also 5.1 percent in April 2025.

A notable aspect is that unemployment in rural areas has been rising continuously. After remaining at 3.9 percent in November and December 2025, the rural unemployment rate increased to 4.2 percent in January and February 2026. It rose further to 4.3 percent in March and again increased in April to reach 4.6 percent. This is the highest rural unemployment rate since September 2025.

Among men aged 15 years and above, the unemployment rate stood at 5.1 percent last month, compared with 5 percent in March 2026 and 5.2 percent in April 2025. The unemployment rate among rural men was 4.7 percent, the highest since September 2025. However, urban male unemployment registered a slight decline, falling to 5.9 percent in April from 6.1 percent in March.

Among women aged 15 years and above, the unemployment rate was recorded at 5.4 percent. It was 5.3 percent in March and 5 percent in April 2025. The unemployment rate among rural women rose to 4.4 percent, the highest since May 2025. It was 3.9 percent in April 2025 and 4.1 percent in March 2026. However, urban female unemployment declined. It fell to 8.5 percent in April from 9 percent in March. In April 2025, it was 8.7 percent.

Decline in Labour Force Participation

During April 2026, the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) among people aged 15 years and above stood at 55 percent. This was lower than 55.4 percent recorded in March. Significantly, the LFPR in rural areas was 57.5 percent, while in urban areas it stood at 50.1 percent. Compared with April 2025, labour force participation has also declined. In April 2025, the LFPR was 55.6 percent, including 58 percent in rural areas and 50.7 percent in urban areas.

The highest labour force participation during the past one year was recorded in December, when the rate reached 56.1 percent. Rural areas made a major contribution, with LFPR touching 59 percent in December 2025. In that month, the urban LFPR was recorded at 50.2 percent, which, excluding April 2026, was the lowest in the past one year.

Labour force participation among women also remained higher in rural areas. Last month, the rate stood at 38.2 percent in rural areas and 25 percent in urban areas. Overall female labour force participation was 33.9 percent. A year earlier, the overall female LFPR was 34.2 percent. At that time, it was 38.2 percent in rural areas and 25.7 percent in urban areas.

The Worker Population Ratio among people aged 15 years and above stood at 52.52 percent last month. It was recorded at 54.9 percent in rural areas and 46.8 percent in urban areas. A year earlier, in April 2025, the Worker Population Ratio was 55.4 percent in rural areas and 47.4 percent in urban areas. Combining all categories, the ratio then stood at 52.8 percent.
