Sales of all major chemical fertilisers - urea, di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), muriate of potash (MOP), NPK and single super phosphate (SSP) - declined in India during the first half of the financial year 2026-27. While domestic urea production increased, output of the other major fertilisers fell. Imports of urea and MOP rose by more than 40 per cent, whereas DAP and NPK imports declined.
According to information received from sources, urea sales during April-September 2026 stood at 18.521 million tonnes, down 4.1 per cent from 19.307 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. Similarly, DAP sales during the first half fell 0.6 per cent year-on-year to 4.364 million tonnes.
MOP sales declined 11.7 per cent to 965,800 tonnes during the first half. NPK sales fell 22.2 per cent to 6.007 million tonnes. SSP sales stood at 2.828 million tonnes, down 1.4 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year.
Urea production during the first half increased 4.3 per cent to 15.064 million tonnes, compared with 14.444 million tonnes in the same period last year. DAP production declined marginally by 0.3 per cent to 1.994 million tonnes from 2.001 million tonnes.
Domestic NPK production recorded a sharp decline of 35.5 per cent, falling to 3.822 million tonnes from 5.928 million tonnes in the previous year. SSP production also decreased 10.4 per cent year-on-year to 2.631 million tonnes.
During the first half, urea imports increased 40.5 per cent, while MOP imports rose 41 per cent. India imported 5.589 million tonnes of urea and 1.679 million tonnes of MOP during April-September 2026. In contrast, DAP imports declined 11.2 per cent to 3.399 million tonnes, while NPK imports fell 31.4 per cent to 1.386 million tonnes.
September figures show that sales of urea and DAP increased, while those of MOP, NPK and SSP declined. Urea sales rose 8 per cent year-on-year to 2.705 million tonnes, while DAP sales increased 6.9 per cent to 983,600 tonnes. MOP sales declined 2.8 per cent to 182,300 tonnes, while NPK sales fell sharply by 39.3 per cent to 676,100 tonnes. SSP sales decreased 0.5 per cent to 332,600 tonnes.
Domestic urea production increased 4 per cent in September, while DAP production rose 17 per cent. However, NPK production declined 44 per cent and SSP production fell 26.9 per cent.
In September 2026, production stood at 2.525 million tonnes of urea, 371,000 tonnes of DAP, 599,200 tonnes of NPK and 397,500 tonnes of SSP.
