After Noida Worker Unrest, UP Govt Raises Minimum Wages by Up to Rs 3,000
After violent protests by workers in Noida, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced an interim hike in minimum wages by up to Rs 3,000, effective April 1, 2026. The move, aimed at easing pressure from rising living costs, will benefit lakhs of workers across industrial and commercial establishments, while also seeking to restore stability in key manufacturing hubs of the NCR.
UP Announces Minimum Wage Hike After Noida Protests, Workers Get Relief
Lucknow/Noida: In a significant relief for workers, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced an increase in minimum wages following recent violent protests by industrial workers in Noida. The decision comes amid rising inflation and mounting pressure from labour groups across the National Capital Region.
The state government has approved an interim hike of up to Rs 3,000 in monthly wages, which will be effective from April 1, 2026. Officials said the increase translates to an approximate 21 percent rise across different labour categories.
Revised Wage Structure
As per the new notification, minimum wages in the Noida–Ghaziabad industrial belt have been revised as follows:
- Unskilled workers: Rs 11,313 to Rs 13,690 per month
- Semi-skilled workers: Rs 12,445 to Rs 15,059 per month
- Skilled workers: Rs 13,940 to Rs 16,868 per month
Similar revisions have been introduced across other municipal areas and districts, with the government making it clear that no employer can pay below the prescribed rates. The revised wages will apply to all industrial and commercial establishments in the state.
Trigger: Violent Protests in Noida
The move follows large-scale protests by thousands of workers in Noida earlier this week. Demonstrators took to the streets demanding wage revisions and better working conditions. In some areas, the protests turned violent, with incidents of arson, vandalism, and stone pelting reported before police brought the situation under control.
Notably, the unrest coincided with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visiting Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh for a job fair and public event.
Workers Cite Rising Cost of Living
Workers argued that despite long working hours, wages had remained stagnant. With rising prices of fuel and essential commodities, many said it had become increasingly difficult to sustain basic living standards.
The discontent was further fueled by recent developments in neighbouring Haryana, where the government announced a wage hike after similar labour unrest in Manesar. The wage gap between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh had also contributed to dissatisfaction among workers in Noida.
High-Powered Committee
In response to the escalating tensions, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a high-power committee to facilitate dialogue between labour representatives and industry bodies. The interim wage hike has been implemented based on the committee’s recommendations.
The government stated that the decision was taken as an immediate relief measure while indicating that broader labour reforms could be considered in the future.
Strict Compliance Ordered
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure strict compliance with the revised wage structure. He also warned that companies violating labour laws, including those related to overtime, weekly holidays, and the safety of women workers, would face stringent action.
Overall, the wage hike is being seen as a balancing step to restore industrial stability while addressing the immediate concerns of workers in one of North India’s largest manufacturing hubs.
